I have a question that came to me tonight about my new CHShop. When I list my categories/sub categories, which way should I place them?
By Genre like this:
TOP>Action
SUB>NEW
SUB>Pre-Viewed

TOP>Comedy
SUB>NEW
SUB>Pre-Viewed

Or, would it be better to do it like this:
TOP>New
SUB>Action
SUB>Comedy
SUB>Drama
etc...
TOP>Pre-Viewed
SUB>Action
SUB>Comedy
SUB>Drama
etc...

Any opinions? I thought maybe listing each genre as a top level category may lead to better SEO, but the second option would probably be easier to shop.

At first I thought the second option would be more user/shopper friendly because the brick and mortar stores generally section that way. Then I realized when I shop online for movies or music I look for the genre first and then decide whether I want new or pre-viewed.

I second that.  I definitely shop by genre first.  :)

And...you could always do both if you want to cover both bases and just link the products between the categories.

That's actually what I was hoping to hear :) I was leaning that way.
I am also thinking it may be best not to separate the new and used, list them together and links in the category description to the advanced search results for "New/Sealed" and "Pre-Viewed."
An example here:

Thanks for the advice!

Great idea!  It makes it easier for the customer to compare price between new and used within a category, if they want, and see what's available.  thumbsup

 :thanks:

I will be ready to roll ahead with adding products this weekend now. I have to make sure everything's just right, then I'll be up and running!
I can't believe that I thought Zen Cart would be more complicated than OSCommerce when I tested them. If I had only known!

I still have more to list with House of Blu, but I also have a $lot$ invested in product with GVW so it takes a little more precedence currently. Every day you sit on it you lose money...

Deb

I've posted this before and I really like a answer. I really like your Leather Outlet Catagory listings with the subcatagorys showing. I think that type of catagory listing with sub catagorys showing rather then being a drop down menu would work out for many of the sellers here. Is this a differnt template or is it a added mod. Please let us in on your secret if is a secret Please let us know

Hey Bob,

I will step up and handle that one because I know Deb is super busy making sales today.

The mod used is the categories dressing mod. The categories are all top levels, no subs. I know they appear to look like they are subs but they are not.

There is no secret to this other than what has already been posted and Deb's talent at web design. I know there was a thread about how important it is to install your categories in the order that you want your meta tags to display and that holds true in TN Leather. In fact it is a perfect example of that thread.

Linking is also utilized, example:

The first category is Leather jackets, everything beneath that related to a jacket is linked to that category.

Hope this helps!

P.S. Great question Bob and keep them coming on www.tnleather.com because if there ever was a cart where everyone in this forum can learn from as it is being built it is TN Leather.

I kind of thought that was what she had done. I've looked at the read me instructions for that mod and it reads like a greek novel to me. Deb was going to install this mod quite awhile ago. It sounds like it might be a easy install but to know what to do with it doesn't. I wish some one would write more detailed instructons on how to use these differn't mods.

Bob-----   Have you looked at the Zen Cart tutorials?     http://www.zen-cart.com/

I like Leather Outlet Category listings setup also, but I will wait until after the first of the year whenever Deb's schedule opens up a bit.
